Answers to the Questions We Hear Most

Starting therapy comes with a lot of questions — and that's a good thing. Here are the ones we hear most often. If yours isn't here, don't hesitate to reach out.

Getting Started

  • What can I expect from my first session?

Your first session is about getting to know each other. We'll talk about what brought you in, what's going on in your life, and what you're hoping to get from therapy. You don't need to have everything figured out or know the "right" things to say — just show up as you are.

We'll also spend some time discussing how we'll work together, answer any questions you have, and make sure the fit feels right. If for any reason it doesn't, we'll help you find someone who's a better match.

  • How do I schedule my first appointment?

The easiest way is to fill out our contact form or give us a call. We'll schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation first — this is a brief, no-pressure conversation to make sure we're a good fit before you commit to anything.

  • How do I know if Gather is the right fit for me?

The fit between you and your therapist is one of the most important factors in successful therapy. That's exactly why we offer a free 15-minute consultation — so you can ask questions, get a sense of our approach, and decide if it feels right. There's no pressure and no obligation.

  • Do I need a referral to start therapy?

No referral is needed. You can contact us directly to get started. If you've been referred by another provider, that's great too — just let us know and we can coordinate care if you'd like.

About Therapy

  • How long does therapy typically take?

It depends on what you're working through. Some people find meaningful relief in a few months. Others stay longer because therapy becomes a valued part of how they process life. There's no set timeline — we work at your pace, with your goals in mind, and we check in regularly about how things are going.

  • What therapeutic approaches do you use?

Our clinicians draw from multiple evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFIT), and Interpersonal Process Therapy. We tailor our approach to what works best for you — therapy should fit your life, not the other way around.

  • Do you offer telehealth / online sessions?

Yes. Although we believe that in-person therapy provides a level of connection deeper than virtual work, we know not everyone can attend in person and there are good uses of online therapy. We offer secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth sessions for clients who prefer to meet online or can't make it to the office. Some clients use a combination of in-person and telehealth . Just let us know your preference.

  • What's the difference between individual and group therapy?

Individual therapy is private, one-on-one time with your therapist to explore your experiences in depth. Group therapy adds the dimension of community — being witnessed by others who understand what you're going through, practicing new ways of relating, and discovering you're not as alone as you feel.

Many clients find both forms of therapy highly complementary. Your therapist can help you figure out which is the best fit — or whether doing both makes sense.

Scheduling & Logistics

  • What is your cancellation policy?

We ask for at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations or no-shows are subject to a fee. We understand that life happens — if something comes up, just let us know as soon as you can.

  • Where are you located?

We're in the process of relocating to Northampton, MA. Until then, we offer secure telehealth sessions. We will continue teletherapy options in the future for clients who prefer to meet online. Specific office details will be provided once our practice finds its new home.

  • What are your office hours?

We see clients by appointment only. Sessions are available during daytime and some evening hours. Availability varies by clinician — we'll work with you to find a time that fits your schedule.

  • How often will I need to come in?

Most clients start with weekly sessions. As therapy progresses, we may adjust to biweekly or monthly depending on your needs and goals. For group therapy, attendance is typically weekly. We'll figure out the right cadence together.
